Shark Noon is a card-driven game in which players act as divers trying to avoid attacks from the surrounding sharks.

Both the divers and the sharks are represented by double-sided tiles that form the playing area. The setup is identical for all player numbers. There is a four-by-four grid with the divers in the four central spots and the sharks on the outside. For the basic game, only the four sharks in the corners are hungry (hungry side open).

Players take turns playing cards to move either the divers or the sharks, or using a special card like the shark cage. Cards come in four color variations, and only one color can be played on each side of the grid. If a color already exists on a side, cards of the same color must be played there. As soon as the third card is played on a side, the sharks on that side attack—unless a player uses a shark cage, for example. If the attack is successful, the diver tile is flipped over. If it is already flipped over, that player loses, and all other players—and the sharks—win.
