Description
King Alfonso X of Spain (1221-1284), nicknamed "the Wise" for his numerous scholarly projects, commissioned a book on board and dice games toward the end of his life. He did not live to see the completion of this magnificent manuscript, richly illustrated in color. For Alfonso, games were more than just a pastime: they symbolized the nature of man and the world in which he lives. Therefore, his book on games represents one of the most important sources on the cultural history of games. For the first time, this work describes chess, dice games, trick-track games, Nine Men's Morris, and other games in a European language.

Ulrich Schädler and Ricardo Calvo are attempting for the first time to make Alfonso X's book of games accessible to a broad audience in a complete German translation from Old Spanish and with a well-founded commentary on the history of the games discussed.
