The Art of Game Design
by Jesse Schell

Anyone can master the basics of game design—no technical expertise is required. It turns out that the same basic psychological principles that work for board, card, and sports games are also key to developing high-quality video games.

This book will teach you how to approach the game conception and development process to create better games. Jesse Schell shows you how to significantly improve your product step by step using a structured, methodical approach.

Good game design emerges when you examine your game from as many perspectives as possible to identify potential weaknesses. These project-specific perspectives, called "magnifying glasses" in this book, include questions related to the respective topic and help you closely examine your game's features. Does it encourage competition among players? Are they motivated to win? This examines one hundred crucial characteristics of a well-designed game.

A wide variety of disciplines, including psychology, architecture, music, visual design, film, mathematics, writing, puzzle design, and anthropology, provide helpful inspiration for game design.

This book will teach you what makes a good game and what you should consider to ensure your game meets your players' expectations and is a joy to play. At the same time, it will provide you with plenty of inspiration—have a pen and paper handy while reading so you can jot down your new ideas right away.

  • Fundamentals of the development and conception of classic games from one of the world's leading game designers
  • 100 rules that provide inspiration for the creative process and allow different perspectives on a game

This comprehensive work isn't exactly cheap, but the detailed descriptions make it worthwhile if you're interested in becoming a better game designer. The many tips from a business perspective also make the book a helpful reference work that can be consulted again and again. 90 out of 100 points Spielemagazin.de, September 11, 2012

This well-structured and meticulously researched book contains comprehensive knowledge on game design, offering readers a rare theoretical and application-oriented foundation for this emerging topic in education. It is ideally suited as primary reading for courses in computer game-related degree programs. Daniel Heid, HAW Hamburg, Department of Media Technology
